Thematic block: INCLUSION AND ACCESSIBILITY

Presentations with practical examples on the topic of ‘Accessibility in museums’

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Thu 07. Nov

Short description

In this thematic block, Dirk Sorge presents the barriers that arise when implementing accessibility in museums and how they can be overcome. Dirk Sorge has been working for and with museums in various roles and functions for over ten years. He has been a mediator, consultant, critical friend and visitor. In doing so, he has campaigned for inclusion and accessibility. He has experienced what structural problems are and how small successes are possible. Much of this has to do with design - but not only in the material meaning. The Moritzburg Art Museum then shows how this can be achieved, how accessibility can be seen as an attitude and a process to be started.

Description

13:00 -14:00: The lecture ‘No money, no time, no desire. Barriers to accessibility’ by Dirk Sorge, museum consultant for inclusion and accessibility

This lecture sheds light on the often invisible obstacles that museums and cultural institutions face when implementing accessibility and inclusion. Despite his many years of involvement as a mediator, consultant and visitor in various museum contexts, Sorge has repeatedly found that it is not only financial and time constraints that make accessibility difficult, but also mental hurdles and a lack of prioritisation within the institutions.

In his presentation, Sorge will report on specific experiences that show how structural problems hinder progress, but also how small successes can be achieved through creative solutions and targeted measures. The lecture will make it clear that accessibility goes far beyond mere physical accessibility and is rather a fundamental question of attitude and the will to be inclusive.

By reflecting on his own experiences and analysing common challenges, as well as highlighting positive examples, the talk will encourage the audience to question existing barriers and find new ways to make their facilities accessible to all.

14:00 -14:30 - Lecture ‘Accessibility as a process: concrete examples from the Moritzburg Art Museum Halle (Saale)’ by Theresa Leschber, Art Education Officer, Moritzburg Art Museum Halle (Saale)

The Moritzburg Art Museum in Halle (Saale) is continuously expanding its offerings for a barrier-free experience of exhibitions and events and wants to give impulses in its lecture to see inclusion not as a project, but as an attitude and process that must be started. Examples will be used to show how this can be achieved.

Museums are places by and for all people. However, their accessibility is not only made possible through barrier-free construction, but also through participation. This requires programmes that take into account the needs of visitors and a diverse society. In this presentation, you will learn about various dimensions of heterogeneity as well as formats that take these into account and tips on how they can be established.
